#Garmin 430 trainer for ipad update
For me, I wanted to be able to simulate real-world procedures around my area of flight and the only way to do that was to use navigraph to update AIRAC using the default 430. So the pros are that the RealityXP is a very good representation of the actual unit, but the con is that it be very out-of-date in terms of nav data right out of the box. The default 530/430 can be updated easily with a Navigraph subscription. Then you have to take the sd card and get that data on to your pc with the realityXP software. The only problem with their product is if you want to keep it up-to-date with AIRAC cycles, you have to have an actual garmin (or maybe jepp) subscription. RealityXP is excellent in terms of the simulated navigator features. It says it is not necessary to update any config files and as I mentioned, I'm not comfortable messing with the guts of all the files. The instructions are also included and it looks like I would be replacing the default unit with the new unit. I'm really curious about the Reality-XP unit for sale ($35). I'm flying the default Baron and I'm now discovering there are some updates available (even 1 with an ipad) so I think I'm going to try and download the updates as the instructions seem pretty straightforward.

That app mimicked the 430w exactly and was really helpful for training. When I got my private and wanted to get really familiar with the 430, I downloaded the Garmin 430 trainer app. I found that it functioned within 90 to 95% of the real thing and it was useful for selecting approaches on-the-fly and practicing getting cleared for an approach, getting vectored to an IAF, etc. You can enter a flight plan, select SID, (STAR if you need to), waypoints and approaches. But the rest is pretty darned accurate for instrument training using a navigator. Some pages are missing (traffic and weather, if you have those on your 530) and the second page of the NAV screen doesn't show all of the data fields. Was in the same boat with IR training and the 430w that was in the c172 I was using vs.
